Common questions
Why does Equine Nursery make sense for me?
Who is Equine Nursery as a company and what is behind its creation?
Equine Nursery was established because we desired a deserving retirement for our own international horses. They are family and they traveled the world competing and giving their best for us. We had top mares with fantastic genetics at our fingertips. These are horses we loved riding, appreciated their mentalities, and recognized their competitive abilities. We set about combining the level of facility and care we wanted for our family's retirement with cutting-edge science, and systematic best practices from reproduction science. We designed a purpose-built program considering the environmental footprint, sustainable farming practices, purpose specific facilities, nutrition, social science of young horses and physical development. We found that many breeding programs do not consider basic things that are already proven in science and designed our program differently from the ground up. We designed a place you would be proud to retire your dream horse. We developed a program to help people who are not full-time breeders have the best experience every step of the way.
How do I give my horse the retirement they deserve?
How do I get another horse like that again?
How do I make this sport more sustainable?
Finding a place to retire horses the way a family member and teammate deserve is often a difficult task. We started with our own horses and knew we wanted them to have a fantastic retirement in terms of facilities, comfort, and care. Many of these top horses are so elite, not many people have recognized or appreciated the interpersonal relationship they have with their owners. Solving this was our starting point to insure we could care for them all like they are our own family.
Equestrian participation is growing throughout the world. Other regions are producing fewer horses domestically for Olympic discipline sports than the past. As this demand globally grows, the supply is stagnant or declining. Europe, which supplies most of the worlds Olympic discipline specific horses, produces slightly fewer horses than they have historically.
There is also a slow shift under way in Europe from many smaller hobby breeders to larger consolidated professional breeders. This, combined with innovations in reproduction technology, is creating higher quality horses generation over generation. The professionalization of breeding requires bigger investments. As a result, horses are costing more and are scouted earlier and earlier in their development pathway.
This has led many riders who want a consistent supply of top horses to start breeding programs to insure a steady stream of horsepower. Horses they can curate from a young age, horses they can be first in line for, horses they know have been educated and developed properly with no baggage at each stage.
Investing in breeding is a long-term solution and requires a time and financial investment. This start-up phase is the most difficult stage for all breeders. However, once you as a rider and/or owner reach the point to enjoy the use of that first crop of horses you bred… it all changes. Now you have a steady, predictable, and more affordable supply of quality horses. Of course, you may still buy other horses, but you will no longer need horsepower and that is a game changer as a competitor.

Europeans have done this well for generations. Broadly, they were always strong in having the next generation developing behind their older international horses. For other regions of the world this was not well developed as part of the domestic systems. This leaves riders constantly required to buy horses at top dollar. By creating your own pipeline of teammates you enable the long term empowerment of your sport.
Why Europe?
It may seem ideal and fun to produce the next generation domestically, and we applaud those that can afford and invest in developing domestic markets. However, even if you can afford to breed locally, often the infrastructure required to build a pipeline to produce horses does not exist, and/or is beyond most individual's scope to create.
As the world becomes more global the equestrian industry like so many other industries have regions that have better economies of scale, and this creates a competitive advantage for certain activities to take place there. For producing horses Europe is that place.
Europe provides a more cost-effective location both for retiring and raising horses. Tightly controlled stallion and mare gradings in each region have not only kept Europe leading in quality for generations but Europe remains the center of the worlds global breeding industry by scale and in terms of sheer number bred. This means access to the best in science of reproduction, because of the concentration of knowledge in a small geographic area. Another consideration is the availability of the best stallions in the world because of the demand and EU open market. At every stage, you can find dedicated experts because there is the scale of demand for specialization. This is true for reproduction, birthing, raising, and training horses, as well as every service and product supply chain.
Europe boasts one of the largest and geographically dense equestrian communities worldwide. This means many shows each weekend for young horses to get experience and education. The variety and proximity of venues keeps the costs of, not just the entry fees, but also transportation and accommodations significantly lower than most parts of the world. For a lower cost the horses can see more and learn more.
This better prepares each individual to succeed. Breeders and investors can hedge their bets on more horses in the pipeline. This is another secret to European success historically, and a benefit to having your breeding program in Europe. You’re not flying over and buying one horse and hoping you got it right. Instead, you are creating a pipeline to systematically produce, select and develop horse power. This spreads risk and increases your chances of long term success.
There is also a marketplace to sell at every stage of the young horse’s development. Not every horse you breed will be what you are looking for. However, we believe you have a responsibility to ensure each young horse you produce finds their own path to succeed. All EU horses are micro chipped which allows breeders to follow them throughout their life. There are also many outlets to sell horses of all talent levels into a development path that suits them. We see this as a critically important element ethically which is not easily found outside of Europe. Having access to these marketplaces keeps costs under control for a breeder and allows them to make good decisions for all of the next generation they create.
Though many horses compete all over the world, the most effective place to produce horses remains Europe. Clients can benefit from all of this well-established infrastructure and industry in Europe by having all of this managed for them by Equine Nursery.
